The Guesthouse rooms are decorated in a European style with a South African touch. We also have a limited number of rooms created especially with the Family in mind, each with a unique decor and luxus bath amenities. Our guests can relax at the pool, enjoy a leisurely walk, hike or bike in the adjacent forests and mountains.
Restaurant: Our Restaurant is located in the 150 year old Manor House of Auberge Rozendal. The cuisine can be described as creative and natural with French Provencal roots. Our ingredients are always fresh, sourced from home-grown organic vegetables, fruits and herbs, as well as free-range farm eggs and milk. Other organic products are locally sourced, such as duck breast, venison and salmon trout. As a special treat, all of our three and four course set menus are introduced by an aperitif of our own internationally acclaimed Rozendal Drinking Vinegar. Meals are served either on the vine-covered veranda overlooking a tranquil lawn or in the dining room with its gallery of canvases by world famous local artists Paul Emsley, Cecil Skotnes and Larry Scully. During colder weather guests can enjoy the warmth and comfort of a roaring fireplace. Guests may partake of a full English breakfast year round. Reservations for Lunch and Dinner menus are essential.
Wine Interest & Activities
Rozendal Farm comprises of 6ha of vines, 4ha of pastures, 2ha of gardens and living space and 13ha of forest and fynbos. The farm is situated in the Jonkershoek valley on the border of Stellenbosch, on the foot of the Jonkershoek mountains. The farm and cellar buildings are in excess of 150 years old.
We make a Merlot-based Bordeaux blend (St. Emillion) in the classical old French style. Our wines are low in alcohol, compared to most wines in South Africa and have a good acidity and freshness. Although we make only one wine, each year is unique and each wine has its own individuality.
Our wines are made biologically with as little intervention as possible. We do not filter our wines and maturation of our wines (not ageing) takes place over two years in oak barrels. No sulphur is added during fermentation and minimal thereafter. Instead we work with the natural acidity of the grape to create a wine able to mature as opposed to ageing. The wine is kept for one year at 18 degrees Celsius and for one year at 15 degrees Celsius. We have also replaced our stainless steel tanks with large French oak vats for fermentation.
Our first vintage is 1983 and our latest available vintage is 2002. We have a selection of the older vintages available on request.
Wines can be delivered countrywide or available from the farm.
Vinegars: Our vinegars are made from a Bordeaux blend of Merlot and Cabernet grape cultivars, cultured by an indigenous “mother” which originates from the first vinegar made on the farm in 1988.
Vegetable Garden: The vegetable garden supplies fresh produce to the families on the farm and to the restaurant (in season). The garden is wonderful place to see Biodynamics in action. The garden is full of life with a diverse array of vegetables growing at any one time. The secret is good compost made from the manure of our own cows and green wastes from the garden. We have been building the soil through the years with compost, cover cropping, crop rotation and Biodynamic sprays.
