Birthplace of Tokaji Aszú, this legendary wine region in north-eastern Hungary and southeastern Slovakia is named after the town of Tokaj, its former commercial centre. Its a relatively small region of around 5,500 hectares of vineyards which encompasses 27 towns and villages. Tokaj has been declared a World Heritage Site in 2002 under the name Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape. With its rural villages, atmospheric cellars and sweet golden wines, this northeastern corner of Hungary is a hidden gem, waiting to be explored.
